NEW PERSIMUNE publication

Rapid estimation of severity of new pandemic influenza types is essential to gauge appropriate level of intervention; the some severe the more intense the intervention. During the 2009 pandemic, Mexican authorities reported substantial severity expressed as a high case fatality rate. In this report, prof Lone Simonsen from CHIP/PERSIMUNE at Righospitalet uses data from a global cohort study lead by INSIGHT to estimate this rate, and find that it was 16 fold lower than initial estimates. These observations can be used to more reliable assess severity in next influenza pandemic. Find the full publication here

CHIP and INSIGHT mourn the loss of Professors David Cooper and Fred Gordin who passed away 18 March

CHIP and INSIGHT mourn the loss of Professors David Cooper and Fred Gordin who passed away on Sunday 18th March 2018.

It is with incredible sadness that we have learned of the passing of two pillars of the INSIGHT network, Fred Gordin in Washington DC and David Cooper in Sydney.

Fred’s leadership in INSIGHT was unparalleled. He directed the Washington International Coordinating Centre, chaired CPCRA, the SMART and currently the START protocol. Fred’s scientific interests focused on pulmonary disease, and his life-long leadership in tuberculosis research is widely acknowledged.

David led the Sydney International Coordinating Centre of INSIGHT. David was a central figure in global HIV research for more than three decades and in forming INSIGHT’s studies and research output over the years. The Kirby Institute @ UNSW embodies David’s leadership. As former president of IAS and builder of research structures in Bangkok and elsewhere in Asia, David was an inspiring and visionary leader.

Fred and David will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with their friends and families.

CHIP and INSIGHT honor their legacy.

Can hypothermia reduce organ dysfunction and mortality in patients with septic shock?

New publication: Results from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV Infection (COCOMO) Study

Marco Gelpi and collegues from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV Infection (COCOMO) Study affiliated with PERSIMUNE recently reported data indicating that even well-treated and in particular older HIV-positive persons remains having a distrinct pro-atherogenic phenotype compared to age and gender matched sections of the general population. This observation renders supports for notions from other sections of research by CHIP and PERSIMUNE, that HIV status is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  Research focused on identifying mechanisms explaining the development of the phenotype and interventions to contract its likely adverse reactions is underway.
